From 2002 only the data from the Police Board are shown.

On 1 September 2002 the new Penal Code entered into force in Estonia, as a result the definitions of the degrees of criminal offences were changed.The maximum punishment prescribed for a criminal offence in the first degree is imprisonment starting from five years, in the Criminal Code the minimum term was eight years. The Penal Code does not define offence in the 3rd degree.

Since 2009 the data on crime are published on the basis of e-file.
